Why Compare Subtitle Files?
Quality Control
After editing or auto-processing subtitles, compare the result against the original to verify only intended changes were made and nothing was accidentally lost or corrupted.
Translation Review
Compare the original language file with a translation to verify:
- All entries are present (nothing skipped)
- Timing is preserved
- Entry count matches
Version Tracking
When multiple people work on subtitles, compare versions to see who changed what — similar to how developers use git diff for code.
Post-Processing Verification

What the Tool Detects
Text Differences
Entries where the dialogue text changed between files. Formatting tags are stripped before comparison, so only visible text changes are flagged.
Timing Differences
Entries where start or end times changed, even by 1 millisecond. This catches both intentional sync adjustments and accidental timing edits.
Added Entries
Entries that exist in File B but not in File A. These appear in the "Only in B" count.
Removed Entries
Entries that exist in File A but not in File B. These appear in the "Only in A" count.
How to Use
- Load File A (left side) — upload or paste the original/reference subtitle
- Load File B (right side) — upload or paste the revised/new version
- Click Compare — the tool analyzes all entries
- Review stats — see counts for identical, text changed, timing changed, added, removed
- Filter results — click stat cards or filter buttons to focus on specific change types
Reading the Results
Color Coding
- Yellow rows — text or timing changed between files
- Red rows — entry only exists in File A (removed)
- Green rows — entry only exists in File B (added)
- No highlight — entry is identical in both files
Badges
- Text changed (yellow) — dialogue text differs
- Timing changed (blue) — start or end time differs
- Only in A (red) — entry was removed
- Only in B (green) — entry was added
Tips
- Compare before and after processing — run any of our tools, then diff the original against the result
- Cross-format comparison — you can compare SRT against VTT; the tool normalizes timings
- Use filters — when comparing large files (1000+ entries), filter to "Changes Only" to skip identical entries
- Check timing after translation — translators sometimes accidentally modify timecodes
